Day 10 – Drumming around the set

Day 5

Its been well over a week since my last post, and I had to put several TODOs on hold to get down to my drum set.  After discovering and fixing damage from a leak (luckily not over the kit) I spent a little less than an hour drumming before the Mrs. came home.

I spent today’s session re-watching some of MikesLessons in the background while I practiced rudiments and drumming around the set.  I know I need a lot of work on the basics, but playing on the set keeps me engaged.

Day 10 Details

  • Tool: MikesLessons.com – Beginners Pack, videos4,5,6,7
  • Cost: 14.95 (9 Lessons)
  • Time 40 minutes
  • Sets: 1

Day 10 Summary

I was happy to see how much easier it was to keep up with Mike this pass.   I missed most of the content, but played along for a few sections, and mostly just played with rock beat variations.  Just trying all sorts of things all over the set. Toms, bass drum, crash symbol.  I made a few (weak) attempts at ghost notes and silent counts, but only made anything decent sounding by accident.

Day 10 Video

So, how well did MikesLessons teach me today? see the results for yourself in my video journal update ( i call it a journal, but I promise no feelings, I don’t even talk, just drumming!)

Day 9 – Kick drum and toms

Day 9

I have been planning to go back through MikesLessons and watch all the videos again. At this point the first few seemed to introductory to require a second watch, and then I got to video 4.

Video 4 is when Mike first introduced the kick drums, and though I thought I had a decent grasp I noticed an emphasis he made that I failed to meet:

“..make sure you can line up that kick drum with any hi-hat [eight-notes]“

Well I could line it up with most eight notes, but not easily, and switching totally destroyed my beat.  So today I will focus on the kick drum.

I also finally watched a “lives lesson” and although far to advanced for me, it did introduce some fun tom-tom examples that give the music a tribal sound.

Day 8 – almost drumming a reasonable groove

Day 8

Anyone foolish or bored enough to read this site two days in a row knows that yesterday I worked on tossing sixteen notes into the existing rock beat.

i.e.:          1  e and – 2 – and – 3 e and – 4 – and -

Today I intend to continue that practice, and hopefully finish up the videos (8 and 9).

Today I plan to:

  • Watching Lessons  8,9 of MikesLessons – Beginners Pack
  • Continue Drum Roll practices (mostly during TV etc)
  • Rhythmic Scale and Rock Beat variations

Day 7 – Mixed count grooves

Day 7

Not sure what the proper term is, but today I added additional sixteen (1/16) drum notes in between the existing 1/8 notes played on the hi-hat.

1  e and – 2 – and – 3 e and – 4 – and -

Today I watched more of MikesLessons and he introduced the additional notes by adding a snare on the 1e and 3e counts, keeping hi-hat on the 1/8 notes.

Today I plan to:

  • Watching Lessons  7-9 of MikesLessons – Beginners Pack
  • Continue Drum Roll practices (mostly during TV etc)
  • Rhythmic Scale and Rock Beat variations

Day 6 – With the kick drum

Day 6

Realized today after missing yesterday’s practice that there no sense in counting day’s missed, cause if I’m not drumming, I’m not learning.

Day 6 Details

  • Tool: Practice
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Sets: 1

Day 5 – Lazy days and Too Far Gone

Day 5

What happened to drumming Day 4? …. Day 3 was New Year’s Eve, so Day 4 was spent recuperating. No effort was spared for drums, or any other activity that did not involve sleeping.

But I hope you all realized it would be nearly impossible for me to actually train, capture and post every day right.  I will however keep up my agreement to post everyday that I train.  Today I am back in the saddle, and so you get another video to giggle, critique or reject.

Today I plan to:

  • Add more sound dampening to the play room for acoustic absorption
    DRUMS ARE LOUD!
  • Continue watching Lessons 5-9 of MikesLessons – Beginners Pack
  • Continue Drum Roll practices (mostly during TV etc)
  • Rhythmic Scale and Rock Beat variations
